Our relationship matured quickly. It had to – I had just moved 4000 miles from my homeland and was pretty much reliant on him in the beginning. I had to trust the decisions on where to live, what to drive, where to keep my money, and a whole bunch of other things. This meant that, as an international couple, gifts were a sore point from the beginning.
My wonderful new husband… he’s a simple guy who doesn’t want for much, and then there’s the fact that his money is my money. It’s our money. I am essentially spending his money on whatever I get for him, and if he doesn’t already own it, chances are he decided it wasn’t worth buying. Over time I formed some go-to gifts:
- Handmade items
- Personalized items
- Things that can be consumed
- Secondhand/bargain priced items
- Experiences rather than tangible goods
As you can see, this doesn’t leave much in the way of options. Often I’d find myself searching and searching for the perfect item, giving up after hours of no dice. I bought him all the beer, he got some paintings and handmade books, we went out for meals and painting classes… I just wished there was something unique. Something that was us.
This is part of the reason I’m excited about this store. My t-shirt designs are based on British/American experiences that only transatlantic couples will really understand. In fact, gifts for international couples are supremely hard to find because we really are a rare breed. So I decided to make it happen. It’s early days, but I’m excited about what I can introduce into my store.
